Firing Don Imus from his radio show, which has endured nearly thirty years, was a poor decision. Yes, he slipped up, and he should have known better than to make those remarks about the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
However, leaving Imus on the air could have led to an ongoing discussion about race that our culture desperately needs at this point in time. There is a very real and devastating racial divide in the U.S. today, and rather than acknowledge it and attempt to bridge the gap, everyone would apparently prefer to tiptoe around the issue.
The swift silencing of Imus shows cowardice, rather than a readiness to further investigate the source of his comments, which are unfortunately representative of a large chunk of our country.
